July 28th: the day we started to borrow resources from next year
Our resources are LIMITED! Today, I would like to bring a very important subject to your attention. On the 70s, we started to outpace the capacity of our planet to renew the resources we utilize, and since then, each year we reach the "overshoot day" sooner and sooner.
And, unfortunately, today is the day in 2022 that we used all resources that the planet could renew sustainably. From this day until the last day of the year, we will be borrowing from next year. Like a paycheck, we will be charged by this bill, with interest. From a planet point of view, this is disturbing. But for Canada and US is even worse. We spent our resources for the whole year in March. We spent 12 months of resources in 3.
Although governments should be held accountable and implement policies that could help to solve these issues, we must do our part.
Fast fashion holds a lot of responsibility on this. Each t-shirt consumes the same amount of water to be made that a person consumes in almost 2 years of drinking water.
Can you imagine buying a loaf of bread, eating a slice, and throwing everything left on the garbage? Not making a sandwich, not giving to somebody, toasting it and crumbling it? This is fast fashion.
And on top of that, we would be buying loafs and loafs of bread, for no reason, even though we would be throwing it off, day after day, just stockpiling it for no reason!
Upcycling, on the other hand, is the opposite. You can still eat only one slice of bread. But you donate the rest. You make a different recipe with it, you feed it to the birds, but in the end, you utilize the whole lot of it.
We must make our part. Of course we cannot do it alone, but each used piece you buy instead a brand new one made on a production line is 600 people that can have 3 liters of water in a day.
