Be proud to be yourself
Today I want to talk about something that we, in 2022, shouldn't even be talking about. From August 21st to August 28th, Ottawa celebrates the Capital Pride Festival. Honestly, it is hard for me to understand that we, as a society, still need to have a week to celebrate the pride to be who we are. In an ideal world, to be yourself should be normal. You should not need to be scared to be who you are! We, as a society, have so many more challenges that put us all at risk, but it seems that some people still think that who or what you like is going to make any difference on this world.
On the middle ages, women were burnt because they were considered witches. At that time, if you had thoughts that were different from what was expected, you could die. This was FIVE HUNDRED years ago.
Today, it seems that part of the society still thinks that they should rule people as they want them to be, instead of them being what they are.
I come from a country (Brazil) that has the highest rates of murders of non-heterosexual people. I feel ashamed of that. We must, ALWAYS, fight for equality. Until someday, where we will not have to fight anymore. Until one day, where a Capital Pride Festival will not make any more sense, because people will not have to fight to be recognized as equals.
Unfortunately, that day seems to be too far away. That's why we should celebrate this week. We should, by all means, support this people that suffer because they don't have the privilege of being what the society thinks is "normal".
When will our politicians start to take care of what really matters? In 50 years, if we keep our way of living, wouldn't matter if you are hetero, homo, gay, trans, lesbian, queer, bi, or whatever. The planet will expel us all, no matter what we are.
We are all living in the same planet, we are sharing the same resources, and one day, I hope, we will tackle the actual problems that we should be tackling.
We are all humans, and we all should be treated as equals.
